DJ. Farley started snapping images in the early days while skateboarding with friends in the 1970’s just for fun . As those images are far gone lost in a storage unit, some he feels still existing somewhere for others to enjoy. He hopes that these images might one day resurface, bringing back memories of those early days. The photos captured the essence of youth, creativity, and the camaraderie of skateboarding culture, preserving a piece of history that remains meaningful despite the passage of time.
Always carrying some image collection device, he continued shooting when possible. Action Sports continued to be a focus, but there was always music around him. His brother Michael Farley, being a Master of the strings and On Tour throughout the 1970s and still continuing to play today, was always a factor in his being around music. Life changed as marriage, a job, and a family happened, but the camera was still nearby.
Wanting to understand the camera and gain knowledge and skills, he searched for shooters in San Diego. Living in Carlsbad he found and introduced himself as a “Newbie” to Leroy “Granny"., Grannis' shooting down at Tamarack with an old manual gear rig and just listened to the Master. He said to put that New Age camera away and Learn the basics first. Then he wanted to meet another Master Al Carrasco Photo editor Breakout Surf Magazine, listened and learned a bit of New School photography there and still to this day considers Al a great Mentor.
Skateboarding, Punk and Rock n Roll was blending together with the Action Sports world he started shooting for the likes of Trans-world, Juice , Surfer , Surfing and Automatic submitting Images was a monthly task that was always on the calendar. Back up a bit A random meeting with the “Mayor of Sunset while strolling . Mario Maglieri helped to change the focus to music after a walk thru the Rainbow and a Legends advice on how to survive the streets of West Hollywood and Rock in Roll.
The Maglieri family was the start and continues to be a catalyst in his RnR photography. From other random meetings too many to type now you’ll have to buy the book someday, Lemmy and Motorhead started to be a staple and focus whenever Todd S. said Motorhead is playing he’d drop what he was doing and he out . Rock n Roll , Punk Rock and Fast Cars and Motorcycles are the Focus of his High Performance Images nowadays . If there’s a show of these likes he ll most likely show up.
Most images used in conjunction with great design with work by Juan Sandoval of Reese Designs fall in line to show People doing what they love .
We hope you enjoy what you view and are excited to hear from each and everyone of you on thoughts and stories you’ve experienced in the trenches.
